Langkawi still retains the air of an exotic paradise, despite being one of Malaysia’s most developed resort destinations. Affordable, easy to get around and offering an abundance of family-friendly activities, it’s little wonder Langkawi is considered Malaysia’s best island getaway for families with kids in tow.
Here are five of our favourite things to do in Langkawi with children.
1. Langkawi SkyCab and Sky Bridge
An absolute must-do, the SkyCab and Sky Bridge is an exhilarating experience for anyone who isn’t too freaked out by heights!
The SkyCab is a cable car ride ascending to the top of the island’s second tallest peak. Taking you to 708m above sea level in just 15 minutes, it’s the world’s steepest cable car, with the ancient Machinchang mountain range providing a stunning backdrop as you soar high above the rainforest canopy.
At the top you’ll find twin observation decks where you can admire breathtaking panoramas, which on a clear day, stretch all the way to Southern Thailand.
Top Station is also the starting point for the dazzling Langkawi Sky Bridge. Snaking its way between two mountain peaks, the 125m long Sky Bridge is longest free span and curved bridge in the world.
The bridge can be reached via a 10 to 15 minute walk along a steepish mountain path, or by the easy option, the SkyGlide, a short ride on an inclined lift.
2. Langkawi Wildlife Park
This well-maintained park lets you get up close with a range of cute and exotic animals from Malaysia and around the world.
The park started out as bird sanctuary and the walk-through aviary is still the highlight here, following a path through landscaped tropical gardens alive with colourful parrots and other free-flying birds.
Kids will have the chance to interact with some of the animals. You can feed the porcupines, monkeys, deer and ostrich, and even a enjoy a cuddle session with a couple of friendly and feisty racoons.
3. Art in Paradise
While the words ‘art’ and ‘museum’ don’t exactly inspire excitement in the minds of too many kids, families definitely shouldn’t dismiss the world’s second largest 3D art museum. Art in Paradise is zany, colourful, wildly imaginative and guaranteed hours of fun.
There are over 100 eye-popping 3D artworks and optical illusions on display, designed to pose with and interact with creatively, so you can snap that enchanting shot of the kids riding a flying carpet through Ancient Egypt, or mum escaping the jaws of a dragon!
4. Mangrove Tour in Kilim Geoforest Park
The Geoforest is a pristine natural paradise comprised of mangroves, hidden beaches and karst limestone hills. One of the best ways to explore the park is by boat, on a guided Mangrove Tour.
The waterways are peaceful and picturesque, immersing you in the sights and sounds of nature. On a three hour tour, you’ll visit the Bat Cave, the Floating Fish Farm, go eagle spotting and discover the fossil-rich Anak Tikus Island.
5. Eagle Square
In Kuah town, the mascot of Eagle Square is the 12m high sea eagle statue, perched at the end of the jetty. The majestic monument is a great place to pose for pictures and is especially photogenic at sunset. A short walk away you’ll find an assortment of restaurants, parks and the Jetty Point Duty Free Shopping Mall.
